HESI Testing Information
*NOTE: The afternoon session will ONLY open after the morning session has been filled.
Time Allowed for testing - 2 ½ hours
Test Consists of - 55 Math questions, 55 Reading Questions, and a Critical Thinking section
Basic Math Skills - Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, general math facts, etc.
Reading Comprehension - Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc.
Critical Thinking Ability - This exam is intended to provide a brief “snapshot” of critical thinking ability in situations encountered in healthcare settings. A total score is reflective of abilities in four categories:
- Problem Solving Refers to the process of inquiry in which the nurse seeks multiple facts to remove obstacles or resolve patient care problems
- Biases and Ethical Dilemmas Addresses ethical, legal, and moral issues, as well as biases nurses may have about patients and others
- Argument Analysis Refers to situations in which the nurse seeks to resolve conflicts or disagreements by considering multiple points of view
- Analysis of Data Addresses the need to interpret patient data correctly, and decide if further nursing action is required
70% is the score required to pass the Math portion of the test
70% is the score required to pass the Reading portion of the test
